Chapter 12: The Mission of the Trinity — Sending, Empowering, Restoring
A Mission in Motion
God is not passive.
He does not sit on a throne waiting for us to climb our way to Him.
From the beginning, the Trinity has been on mission — sending, empowering, and restoring what was lost.
The Father sends. The Son goes.
The Spirit fills.
And this mission is not finished yet.
Sent from the Beginning
In the beginning, the Trinity moved outward —
not because they lacked anything, but because love overflows.
The Father spoke. The Word created. The Spirit hovered.
Humanity was sent into the garden — to bear God’s image,
to fill the earth,
to reflect His glory.
But we rebelled —
and turned the mission into a mess.
The Father Sends
Even in our rebellion, the Father kept sending. He sent prophets to warn and guide.
He sent His Word to speak.
He sent His Spirit to empower craftsmen, judges, kings.
And in the fullness of time, He sent His Son.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son…” (John 3:16) The Father’s heart has always been to send —
to go after the lost,
to pursue the wanderer,
to bring the dead back to life.
The Son Goes
The Son did not hesitate.
He left heaven’s glory to take on flesh.
He walked dusty roads, touched lepers, washed feet.
He healed, taught, wept, laughed — and then laid down His life.
At every step, He obeyed the Father’s mission —
not in His own strength, but in the power of the Spirit.
“As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” (John 17:18)
Jesus lived as a man filled with the Spirit to show us how to live on mission too.
The Spirit Empowers
When Jesus ascended, He promised not to leave us alone.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8)
At Pentecost, the Spirit filled the Church with fire and courage. Ordinary men and women became bold witnesses.
The gospel spread like wildfire.
The mission of the Father, accomplished through the Son, now continues through the Spirit — in us.
The Church on Mission
We are not saved just to sit and wait for heaven. We are saved to join the mission.
The Father sends us. The Son leads us.
The Spirit empowers us.
Wherever you are — in an office, a classroom, a neighborhood, or a distant nation —
you are part of God’s mission to restore what was lost.
You are not the hero of the story.
But you carry the message of the Hero.
Restoring What Was Broken
The mission is not just about saving souls — it is about restoring everything sin broke.
The Father is making all things new. The Son is reconciling heaven and earth.
The Spirit is transforming lives and communities.
“Behold, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21:5)
In the final garden, the mission will be complete — and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
Why It Matters
Why does it matter to understand the mission of the Trinity? Because you were made for this.
Because you cannot join the mission if you don’t understand who is sending you and how it works.
Because the mission does not depend on your strength — it depends on His Spirit.
And because this is the story we are living:
In the Garden of Eden, we were sent but rebelled.
At the cross and Pentecost, the mission was relaunched.
In the final garden, the mission will be finished, and we will dwell with Him forever.
To live on mission now is to bring a piece of that final garden into the present.
Reflection
The mission of the Trinity did not stop with Jesus. It did not stop with Pentecost.
It continues — through you.
You are not here by accident. You are sent.
You are empowered. You are part of the plan.
So stop waiting for a perfect moment. The mission is already underway.
Join Him.
Questions to Consider:
✦ How have you seen the Father, Son, and Spirit working together in the mission of the Church?
✦ Do you see yourself as sent — or just surviving?
✦ Where might the Spirit be prompting you to join God’s mission more boldly?
✦ How does the garden-to-garden story help you see the mission as bigger than just “getting to heaven”?
Prayer
Father, thank You for sending. Jesus, thank You for going.
Spirit, thank You for filling and empowering.
Forgive me for living as if life is about me.
Help me join Your mission — wherever You lead, whatever it costs.
Until the final garden, make me faithful in this one.
Amen.
